With his action-packed movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, director Gareth Edwards made the galaxy far, far away a little bit bigger. It’s seeing a release on DVD, 3D Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray, digital download and presumably also Holonet from April 10th. Until then to whet your appetite we have a sneak peak at the exciting behind the scenes special features.
Unfortunately the DVD will be lacking in bonus content, but others will be able to enjoy these 11 great features.
A Rogue Idea
This follows the conception for a wider Star Wars film outside of the central Skywalker Saga that would eventually become Rogue One. What’s great here is seeing the sheer love and enthusiasm at play from everyone but especially from director Gareth Edwards; we even get to see his holiday snaps from his trip to the Tunisia Star Wars locations for his birthday.
Six mini features cover the conception and realization of our cast of main heroes and villains. There are some great little titbits of information here, like Riz Ahmed’s multiple streams of audition videos for the role of Bodhi, the Star Wars Clone Wars origins of Forest Witaker’s Saw Gerrera, and the significance of casting Jiang Wen and Donnie Yen in the film.
Visions of Hope: The Look of “Rogue One”
One of the most important aspects of the Star Wars films is the out of this world visuals, and the designers wanted to try new things with Rogue One but still be in keeping with the established style. We see them go back to the literal drawing board of Ralph McQuarrie’s original to create some of the new locations and characters that add to the Star Wars universe.
The Princess and the Governor
A look at what was possibly one of the most talked about aspects of Rogue One; the digital recreation of Peter Cushing for the role of Governor Tarkin. Seeing the performance be put together layer by layer is a fascinating process, as it is with the same technique used to give us a circa-1977 version of the dearly departed Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia.
We all love looking out for the little hints and secrets and connections in movies, and this feature showcases some of Rogue One’s finest; from a beloved Star Wars Rebels character mention, to some familiar faces from the Mos Eisley Cantina.
Epilogue: The Story Continues
The success of Rogue One opens up a lot of possibilities for storytelling in the Star Wars galaxy. Here, at the World premiere for the movie, the cast and filmmakers come face to face with the fans for whom Star Wars is everything. There is definitely hope for the future.
And that’s everything. It’s a shame that we won’t be getting a commentary or maybe some of the multitudes of deleted scenes, but it’s still a very interesting glimpse into the making of one of last year’s best films.
