Ghost in the Shell live remake gets its director

After a lot of speculation as to whether a live version of classic manga film Ghost in the Shell would ever see the light of day, Deadline confirms that it has found a director for English-language adaptation.

Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders has signed on to helm the film after Steven Spielburg encouraged the rights to be acquired by Dreamworks, resulting the project to be in development hell.

The film is a thriller set in 2029, when crimes can be committed by advanced hacking. The protagonist is Motoko Kusanagi, a female cyborg cop tries to track down a mastermind hacker known as the Puppet Master.

Whether Sanders can live up to the fansí expectations of the cult classic is yet to be determined, but he may have to get the wagon rolling on production quickly after it going stale in development hell.
