Ponyo (R2/UK BD) in June

Optimum Home Entertainment have announced the UK DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of Ponyo on 7th June 2010. The latest film from director Hayao Miyazaki is inspired by the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale “The Little Mermaid” and also incorporates a very contemporary concern for nature. The plot centres around a goldfish named Ponyo who befriends a five-year-old human boy, Sosuke, and wants to become a human girl.

Available on single-disc DVD (£17.99 RRP), two-disc SE DVD (£19.99 RRP) and Blu-ray/DVD Combo (£22.99 RRP), extras on the SE DVD and BD Combo include:

We can also confirm the UK Blu-ray from Optimum is the same disc as the Australian release from Madman (you get a territory select screen when you pop it in, and can choose between Australia/New Zealand & UK).

The Blu-ray is coded for Region B only.

Also confirmed the Optimum UK and Madman Australian discs are one and the same.

And a strange note re: the Blu-ray when you choose the UK territory option - it opens with the standard Optimum logo/warning screens etc. and then proceeds to play 3 ghibli trailers in 1080/24 (Tales from Earthsea, The Cat Returns & Ocean Waves). Not that strange you say, but while Earthsea is the English trailer and looks to be at least proper HD, the others are the Japanese trailers with no subs and are horribly upscaled.

Anyway, the rest of the disc looks pretty damn good from what I've seen.
