Cinema Review Archive: August 2001

Tears of the Black Tiger

Michael Brooke has reviewed the theatrical release of Tears of the Black Tiger, a wonderfully overwrought Thai Western (!) that is a clear front runner for the title of the most certifiably bonkers film of 2001. It's The Umbrellas of Cherbourg with a triple-figure body count - and it's just as crazed as that sounds!

A Knight's Tale

Courtesy of Odeon Cinemas (Chelmsford/Southend), Raphael Pour-Hashemi has reviewed the theatrical release of A Knight's Tale.An anachronistic approach to a medieval jousting championship with a touch of romance, but do you really want to see it? A Knight's Tale is out on general release Friday 31st August.

Heartbreakers

Courtesy of Odeon Cinemas (Chelmsford/Southend), Raphael Pour-Hashemi has reviewed the theatrical release of Heartbreakers.A con-man (or woman!) comedy starring the sexy duo of Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Heartbreakers is on general release today.

Lucky Break

Alexander Larman has reviewed the theatrical release of Lucky Break. Not really 'the next Full Monty', but a fairly enjoyable British comedy with some good moments nonetheless. The film goes on general release August 24th.

Moulin Rouge

Alexander Larman has reviewed the theatrical release of Moulin Rouge. The first film to be released this year that looks like a serious contender for the Oscars next year, it is also one of the most invigorating cinematic experiences in ages. The film goes on general release on September 7th.

Planet Of The Apes (2001)

Courtesy of Odeon Cinemas (Chelmsford/Southend), Raphael Pour-Hashemi has reviewed the theatrical release of Planet Of The Apes (2001). The film is out theatrically on the 17th August 2001. Read the review to see if Tim Burton's 'revisit' to the 1968 classic does it justice, or has it become a mere summer action blockbuster aiming for the lowest common denominator.

Together

Michael Brooke has reviewed the theatrical release of Together.

The Parole Officer

Gary Couzens has reviewed the theatrical release of The Parole Officer, a first starring vehicle for Steve Coogan. The results are neither very good nor very bad, and will depend a lot on your opinion of Coogan himself. The Parole Officer went on general release in the UK and Ireland on 10 August.
